As an advocate for effective healthcare communication, Chibogwu Igwe-Nmaju is at the forefront of efforts to combat Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria.

With millions of girls at risk, she is using strategic communication to dismantle harmful cultural narratives, promote awareness, and drive policy enforcement to protect vulnerable communities.

Nigeria remains one of the countries with the highest prevalence of FGM, with an estimated 19.9 million women and girls affected (UNICEF, 2021). While legal frameworks such as the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act criminalises FGM, enforcement remains weak due to deep-seated traditions, misinformation, and societal pressure.

Igwe-Nmaju emphasises that effective healthcare communication is essential in bridging this gap—educating families, healthcare providers, and policymakers about the severe health risks and human rights violations associated with the practice.

“Legislation alone is not enough,” says Igwe-Nmaju. “We need a clear, culturally sensitive communication strategy that engages traditional leaders, healthcare professionals, and media platforms to drive meaningful change.”

She advocated for community-centered awareness campaigns, ensuring that messages about the dangers of FGM reach people in ways they understand—through local languages, storytelling, and survivor-led discussions.

In her advocacy work, Igwe-Nmaju also highlights the critical role of healthcare workers in identifying and supporting survivors of FGM. She calls for better training of medical professionals, ensuring they are equipped to provide trauma-informed care and accurate information to prevent further harm.

Additionally, she stressed the importance of leveraging digital platforms and radio broadcasts to expand the reach of anti-FGM messaging, particularly in rural areas where the practice remains prevalent.

Through her expertise in healthcare communication, Chibogwu Igwe-Nmaju is reshaping the conversation on FGM in Nigeria. By amplifying evidence-based advocacy, survivor voices, and community-driven solutions, she is pushing for a future where no girl is subjected to this harmful practice, and every woman’s right to health and dignity is protected.
