The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward formalising the status of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Imo State, as a fully recognised federal institution.

On Thursday, lawmakers passed through the second reading a bill seeking to provide statutory backing for the university’s establishment.

The proposed legislation, jointly sponsored by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State, was presented for second reading by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere at plenary.

According to the Bill’s explanatory memorandum, the law aims to provide a clear legal and administrative framework for the university’s operations. This will ensure that the institution functions efficiently under a defined governance structure and academic model that meets both national and international standards.

The bill outlines key objectives, including strengthening the governance and administration of the university, enhancing teacher training and higher education, and promoting research and innovation in education. It also seeks to improve access to higher education, particularly for underrepresented groups in the teaching profession.

One of the major goals of the legislation is to align the university’s curriculum and operations with global best practices to improve the quality of education in Nigeria. “This bill will ensure that Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education plays a crucial role in preparing highly qualified educators for Nigeria’s evolving educational landscape,” the sponsors stated.

The lawmakers emphasized that once enacted, the law will enable students to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in education and other related disciplines, thereby expanding academic opportunities.

When the bill was put to a voice vote by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary session, it received overwhelming support from lawmakers and was passed accordingly.

The proposed legislation will now proceed to the next legislative stage as stakeholders anticipate its full passage into law. If successful, this move will further strengthen teacher education and professional development in Nigeria, setting a new benchmark for educational excellence.
