Zambia’s President Hichilema Warns His Ministers Against Dozing Off In Cabinet Meetings

Zambian President, Hakainde Hichilema, has issued a stern warning to his ministers against dozing off during cabinet meetings, describing the habit as a serious lapse in discipline and self-control.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Local Government Minister Gift Sialubalo on Monday, Hichilema expressed frustration over ministers failing to stay attentive during crucial deliberations.

“In cabinet, somebody’s sleeping at 10 hours – the question is where were they… if you can start conking there? To me, that is a crime, a serious crime,” he said.

While the president did not specify what he meant by “indulgence,” local media have widely interpreted his remarks as referring to excessive alcohol consumption and late-night partying. He cautioned that such behaviour not only undermines service delivery but also poses a risk to state security.

“I have advised cabinet that we must have a self-censure. When you’re in public office you must have… self-control, not to over-indulge,” he stated, citing biblical teachings on self-discipline and warning that reckless conduct could lead to self-destruction.

Hichilema, who secured a landslide victory in 2021 on a promise to revive Zambia’s struggling economy, has been vocal about holding government officials accountable. Since assuming office, he has dismissed several senior officials, including ministers, over performance-related concerns.

The president also rebuked ministers who “develop a knack” for disclosing sensitive state information on social media, particularly “during happy hours.”

“So how do you participate in a meeting when you are sleeping? The message is very clear: you are not interested in cabinet deliberations on behalf of Zambians. So why are you sitting there?” he asked.

Hichilema is expected to seek re-election in next year’s general election, where he may face a strong challenge from his predecessor, Edgar Lungu. Lungu, who has announced a political comeback, is currently barred from running but remains a formidable figure in Zambia’s political landscape.
