The former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), has regained his freedom after spending 56 days in captivity.

Tsiga was abducted from his hometown Tsiga, in Bakori Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State on February 5, 2025, alongside nine other residents.

His release comes after prolonged negotiations and the payment of unspecified amount as ransom by his family.

A close family member revealed that after the ransom was delivered, the kidnappers remained silent for a week before contacting the family and allowing Brig-Gen Tsiga to speak with them.

“The money was taken to them, and it was only after one week, on Tuesday, March 11, that they called, and we heard his voice,” the source said.

He further disclosed that the kidnappers had attempted to demand additional payment, but no further money was given to them.

A top military source also confirmed Tsiga’s release, stating that he was in good health condition. It was learned that he is currently in Zamfara State and is expected to be transported to Abuja soon.

Tsiga’s abduction and prolonged captivity underscored the prevailing security challenges in the North-West region, where kidnappings for ransom have become a recurring issue.

Also, a member of his family, Abdulahi Tsiga, confirmed his release to our correspondent on Wednesday night.

Tsiga’s release brings relief to his family and associates, who had been anxiously awaiting his safe return since the kidnap incident occurred.
