The poor condition of students and hostel facilities, among other issues, has been under scrutiny at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos.

This is according to excerpts from a report personally submitted to the Honourable Minister of Education on December 20, 2024, four months after the Council Committee and Special Investigative Panel set up by the Council submitted their reports, which were obtained by LEADERSHIP.

The report was submitted to the Honourable Minister of Education by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Adenuga Adeniyi Olatunde, without the signatures of other members of the 8th Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos.

The report recommended that the Management establish a sustainable mechanism for regular dialogue with the Students Union Government of FCE (T), Akoka, and by extension, engage with the NANS executives to ensure a cordial relationship between Union leaders and Management.

The Management was also urged to put in place a system to ensure that students pay a reasonable surcharge, which should be approved by the Council. Individuals who lost personal belongings should be consoled and compensated based on the availability of resources.

Meanwhile, the College Transport Department has been called upon to ensure that all official vehicles are comprehensively insured immediately. The policy should cover all forms of mishaps, as was recently witnessed at the College.

“The Management of the College should immediately rebuild host community/College relationships and resuscitate students’ and staff buses or other transportation models to aid movement in and out of the College.”

Based on the investigation conducted by the Panel and its findings, it was revealed that the major causes of the crisis on July 29, 2024, were the failure of governance, non-performance of job roles, inefficient management of resources, incompetence, weak leadership by the Provost, poor condition of students’ hostel facilities, the poor condition of the medical centre, lack of potable water supply, and the poor environmental condition of the College, among others.
