Concerns are mounting in Ojokoro Local Government as residents and party members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday protested over an alleged plot to impose an unknown candidate on the party members ahead of the party’s forthcoming LG primary elections.
The members of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) took to the streets with various placards expressing disappointment and deep dissatisfaction with the alleged imposition.
The placard-carrying party members, however, cited a deviation from democratic norms and a breach of both the Nigerian Constitution and the APC’s internal procedures.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Hon. Olusegun Alawaye, stated that the party members in Ojokoro won’t allow a stranger to be imposed on them.
“There is a strong rumour that some leaders are working to impose a stranger on us. We must go to the field to exercise our popularity. The election must be free and fair. The leaders are answerable to the party members,” Alawaye, a prominent stakeholder in the party, stated.
Also speaking, Janet Gbadamosi, called for democratic processes, saying the ‘stranger’ doesn’t understand the plight and pulse of residents and party members.
“Let people exercise their political rights. We are appealing to the leaders to take action. The person they are proposing doesn’t live here. He doesn’t understand the plight of our residents.”
Another APC member, Comrade Bello, emphasised the significance of listening to the grassroots.
“There’s a rumour about imposition. Our voices still matter. The leaders must understand us.
A youth representative and APC member, Olatunji Abiola, called out notable figures allegedly behind the move, including Hon. Mudashiro Obasa, Hon. Omisore, and Hon. Olotunji.
“Let the people vote. This is democracy. A political election should be an election, not a selection. If imposition stops, then the grassroots level will gain recognition. The youth deserve to be heard,” he said.
