The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC) has threatened to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission over the exclusion of its governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from the list of candidates for the 2027 governorship election.
The state chairman of the party, Husseini Mairiga, said the NDC would seek legal redress if INEC failed to resolve its complaint over the exclusion, adding that the party had yet to receive any response from the commission following the expiration of the October 24 deadline for complaints.
Mairiga disclosed this in a telephone interview with Leadership reporter on Sunday, saying he would seek an update on the matter during a visit to Abuja on Monday.
“Up to now, we have not heard anything from INEC. I even asked my leaders at the national level, but they have not received any information either,” he said.
The chairman said he intended to use his visit to Abuja to find out the status of the party’s complaint and determine the next step.
“From there, I will try to see what is going on and get an update,” he added.
Mairiga, however, said the party was prepared to approach the court if the commission failed to address its concerns.
“If INEC does not give us any update, we are going to court. We cannot just leave it like that,” he said.
The NDC had earlier lodged a complaint through its national leadership after INEC directed affected political parties to report grievances over the exclusion of their candidates by October 24.
Mairiga maintained that Gwarzo was qualified to contest the election, insisting that the candidate was a duly registered member of the party.
