The Bauchi State Government has expressed optimism about the repositioning of the Bauchi Meat Factory as part of broader efforts to boost the state’s economy and increase its revenue.
The state commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Bala Musa Lukshi, made this known yesterday during a familiarisation tour of agencies under his ministry.
He disclosed that investors have already indicated interest in partnering with the factory, emphasising that a large market awaits the facility, with many of its installations still functional.
In his welcome address, the general manager of the Bauchi Meat Factory, Alhaji Kabiru Abdullahi Makera, informed the commissioner that the factory was established in 1964 and began operations in 1968.
According to him, it has the capacity to slaughter 250 cattle and 1,500 small ruminants daily, processing approximately 13,700 tons of meat annually.
Makera also revealed that the Bauchi Meat Factory was founded alongside a similar facility in Botswana. Meat products were historically transported by rail across Nigeria and to neighbouring countries.
He stated that the vision of the factory is to become the leading supplier of Halal meat and meat products in Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond. Its mission, he said, is to protect public health by providing safe, hygienic, and high-quality meat products.
Products from the factory include fresh meat, offals, bones, instant shredded minced beef, dambun nama (a spiced meat dish), sauces, dried meat, and more.
The commissioner was accompanied during the visit by the overseeing permanent secretary and director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, along with other directors from the ministry.
Also present were members of the L-PRES team, including Dr. Samuel Maina (representing the State Project Coordinator, Musa Adamu One), Animal Husbandry Services Officer, Abubakar Isa Shehu, Communication and ICT Officer Mohammed Danladi Abdul, and the ministry’s media team.
