The Abia State Government has set the second quarter of 2025 to commence its proposed 10,000 barrels per day capacity modular refinery project.

Commissioner for Information in the state, Okey Kanu announced this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s state executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

According to him, “This of course is as a result of the approval granted to HSI-by the federal government to build and operate the refinery.”

The refinery is one of the administration’s proposed signature projects at the state Industrial and Innovative Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West local government area.

“The government is making steady progress on the project and to this effect, the payment of compensation to all affected landowners has been completed.

“Bush clearing and earth works around the project site have commenced, especially around the modular refinery site,” he explained.

Kanu said the administration had through the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources embarked on study of solid minerals deposits across the state to determine their quantities and commercial viability.

“By the time the results come in fully, the administration will be in a position to determine what or which amongst them to go for and allow interested investors to come in and mine,” the commissioner stated.
