Workers in Bayelsa State, under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have called for better protection of their rights and welfare, especially in the face of growing insecurity and shrinking civic freedoms.
The demand was made during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at Peace Park, Yenagoa. This year’s event theme was “Workers’ Insecurity and the Need to Reclaim the Civic Space.”
In a joint statement by the state chairmen of NLC and TUC, Comr. Barnabas Simon and Comr. Julius Laye, the labour leaders expressed concerns over poor working conditions, inequality in remuneration, and limited opportunities for self-expression among civil servants.
They noted that while the political class enjoys robust welfare packages, the average worker struggles with economic hardship and insecurity at work and at home.
While appreciating Governor Douye Diri’s administration for approving a new salary structure and consistently paying salaries, they said more needs to be done to safeguard workers‘ futures. They urged the government to introduce policies that will empower workers, enhance workplace safety, and ensure that civil servants can contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.
They also highlighted key achievements by the state government, such as the approval of the N80,000 minimum wage, completion of the NLC and TUC secretariat buildings, and implementation of the 25/35% salary review effective May 2025.
They said these have boosted workers’ morale, but added that a safer, freer civic environment is essential for sustained productivity.
In his address, the Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and development of workers in the state.
He expressed solidarity with workers across all sectors, noting that their dedication and hard work are the backbone of Bayelsa‘s progress. He appreciated their contributions and assured them that his government would continue to prioritise their needs through improved working conditions and employment opportunities.
The governor highlighted key steps taken to boost the civil service, including the ongoing recruitment of 1,000 workers, the employment of more teachers, and the construction of a 9-storey state secretariat complex.
He also emphasised the state’s investment in critical infrastructure, such as a new sports stadium and stable power supply, which he said would attract investors, create jobs, and boost the economy.
Governor Diri urged workers to take advantage of the Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme and embrace healthier lifestyles through regular exercise.
While acknowledging the challenges workers face, such as the high cost of living and the need for fair compensation, Diri pledged to continue engaging with labour unions to improve the quality of life for Bayelsa’s workforce.
He encouraged workers to remain hopeful and committed to the shared vision of a prosperous and just Bayelsa State.
