June 12: Idahosa Wants Recommitment To Democratic Ideals

Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to the ideals of democracy, freedom, justice, and national unity as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

In a Democracy Day message through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor, also paid tribute to the fallen heroes of Nigeria’s democracy.

The deputy governor noted that the essence of recommitment is to enable the people enjoy more democratic gains.

He said the annual celebration provides an opportunity for citizens and leaders alike to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, assess the progress made over the years, and recommit themselves to strengthening democratic institutions.

According to the deputy governor, democracy remains the most effective system for promoting inclusiveness, accountability, the rule of law, and active citizen participation in governance.

“The continued growth and success of our democracy depend on the collective commitment of all stakeholders to uphold these fundamental values.”

Idahosa paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

He described June 12 as a landmark date that symbolizes the resilience, courage, and collective aspiration of Nigerians for democratic governance and national development.

Idahosa commended President Bola Tinubu for initiatives aimed at deepening democratic governance, promoting economic growth, fostering national unity, and advancing institutional reforms across the country.

He also praised Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for providing purposeful leadership and delivering the dividends of democracy through people-oriented policies and development programmes across the state.

The deputy governor reassured Edo residents of the administration’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and sustainable development.

He noted that efforts remain focused on infrastructure development, economic empowerment, improved security, and the overall welfare of citizens.

He concluded by urging Nigerians, particularly the people of Edo State, to remain law-abiding, actively participate in the democratic process, and support initiatives geared toward peace, progress, and development.
