The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has dismissed reports suggesting irregularity in the reappointment of Professor Abdullahi Mustapha as Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA).

The OSGF affirned that the appointment process followed due procedure and presidential approval.

OSGF’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, clarified that the reappointment was legally approved by President Bola Tinubu in line with extant laws governing federal appointments.

“There is no tenure breach whatsoever,” the statement read.

The statement stressed that, “The reappointment of any Chief Executive of a Federal Government agency is the exclusive prerogative of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and in this instance, the President has formally approved Professor Abdullahi Mustapha’s reappointment for a final five-year term with effect from 31st October, 2024.”

The SGF’s office explained that its role is limited to conveying such presidential directives, issuing appointment letters, and documenting appointees — not initiating or unilaterally extending tenures.

It further described recent media narratives accusing the SGF of “impunity” and procedural breaches as misleading and unfounded.

It urged the public and stakeholders to disregard such reports, which the office said were clearly intended to cause confusion.

Professor Mustapha was first appointed in 2019 and is now set to serve a second and final term, following the President’s directive.

The statement reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transparency, due process, and rule of law in all federal appointments.
