It was a homecoming steeped in symbolism and significance as Governor Hyacinth Alia returned to Vandeikya, the administrative headquarters of his Local Government Area and ancestral home, to render an account of his stewardship.

The occasion was not just ceremonial it was a demonstration of leadership, humility, and an unwavering commitment to public accountability.

The people of Kunav, a proud and dynamic ethnic bloc in Benue State, had formally requested a midterm report from their illustrious son, who currently serves as the Executive Governor. In an era where transparency is often an afterthought, Governor Alia’s decision to respond to this call with promptness and openness marked him as a different breed of leader one who values the trust of his constituents.

A Gathering of Pride and Purpose

The event drew the crème de la crème of Kunav society. From revered traditional rulers and cultural custodians to political stalwarts, business elites, and youth leaders, the gathering represented a cross-section of the community’s best. It was both a show of solidarity and a powerful endorsement of a son who has carried their collective aspirations with grace and grit.

Why Nigeria Should Not Be Designated Country Of Concern

Governor Alia did not disappoint. In a speech that was as detailed as it was impassioned, he enumerated key milestones achieved within the first two years of his administration ranging from infrastructural development, educational reforms, healthcare improvements, and renewed investment in agriculture to peacebuilding efforts in a state long marred by conflict.

The applause that punctuated his address was more than a mere ceremony it was a thunderous affirmation that the people were not only listening but approving. Through the voices of their traditional institutions, political elders, and development associations, the Kunav people gave Governor Alia a resounding pat on the back.

Significance Beyond the Moment

This gathering came at a time when murmurs of a possible second-term bid for Governor Alia were beginning to swell into visible political momentum. For many, the midterm report was more than a scorecard, it was a signal. It reinforced the perception that Alia is a leader who not only listens but also delivers. In a state where trust in leadership has historically wavered, his decision to render an account directly to his people may have set a new standard for public office holders.

The significance of the event also lies in the political message it sends: that governance is a collective responsibility. By embracing his roots and recognizing the people’s right to demand accountability, Governor Alia is deepening democratic practice at the grassroots level. This, in turn, could energize civic participation, foster greater transparency, and build a culture of performance evaluation in governance.

The Power of Accountability

What does the governor stand to gain from this show of openness? A great deal.

First, he cements his legitimacy not only as an elected official but as a leader who understands that power flows from the people. Second, he wins trust, which is the currency of sustainable leadership. And third, he sets a compelling precedent that could resonate beyond Benue State, inspiring a generation of politicians to embrace accountability as a virtue rather than a burden.

In a political landscape often marred by distance between leaders and the led, Governor Alia’s engagement with his home community demonstrates the value of closing that gap. It is a strategic yet sincere move that may pay off politically and morally in the years ahead.

Leading by Example

Leadership, they say, is better shown than said. Governor Alia has, through this singular act, exemplified leadership by example. He did not send emissaries. He did not issue a cold press statement. He stood before his people, under the same sky that bore witness to his upbringing, and spoke to them with candor and conviction.

His actions speak louder than promises. In answering the call of his kinsmen, he not only fulfilled a civic duty but also rekindled the age-old values of accountability, respect for community, and responsive governance.

As the sun set on Vandeikya that day, it was clear that the people saw in Governor Alia not just a politician, but a statesman in the making; one who leads with heart, integrity, and the boldness to face his people and say, this is what I have done with the mandate you gave me.

And if the rising tide of support is anything to go by, the road to a second term may have just begun with the resounding footsteps of home leading the way.
