The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has called on the media to assist in monitoring public officers’ compliance with the Code of Conduct rules.

Led by its chairman, Dr Abdullahi Usman Bello, during a courtesy visit to the corporate headquarters of LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group in Abuja on Thursday, the CCB said the visit was aimed at exploring collaboration opportunities to promote integrity, transparency, and good governance in Nigeria’s public sector.

Dr. Bello emphasised the critical role of the CCB in upholding ethics and accountability in public office.
He highlighted the Bureau’s mandate, which includes requiring public officials to declare assets, monitoring compliance with the code of conduct for public officers, and addressing breaches of ethical standards in the public sector.

He outlined the importance of media partnerships in creating public awareness of the Bureau’s functions and encouraging compliance among public servants.

He further explained that the Bureau seeks support from LEADERSHIP in investigative journalism, especially in exposing unethical practices in public offices.

Dr. Bello also discussed the Bureau’s ongoing initiatives to simplify asset declaration procedures, such as adopting digital methods to reduce administrative costs.

The Vice Chairman of LEADERSHIP, Mike Okpere, and the editorial team, led by Managing Editor, Raliat Ahmed-Yusuf, welcomed the CCB delegation and expressed appreciation for the visit.

The editorial team assured the CCB of its willingness to support the Bureau’s objectives, especially those related to public enlightenment and advocacy for transparency in governance. Both parties agreed to establish a liaison framework that will allow for regular information sharing, joint advocacy campaigns, and capacity-building workshops aimed at sensitising public servants and the general public to the principles of ethical leadership.

The meeting allowed the CCB to clarify its distinct role from other anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC. Dr. Bello explained that while the EFCC and ICPC focus on investigating and prosecuting corruption cases, the CCB primarily monitors and enforces ethical standards among public officers.

The Vice Chairman extended a hand of collaboration by offering LEADERSHIP’s services at a discounted rate to the CCB. The visit ended with a mutual commitment to maintaining a collaborative relationship between the CBB and LEADERSHIP to promote accountability and good governance in Nigeria.
