The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has congratulated Samson Adamu on his appointment as substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing the development as a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s representation in continental sports governance.
Olopade said Adamu’s emergence marked a moment of national pride and reflected the growing expertise of Nigerians in football administration, noting that his appointment was a significant milestone in CAF’s 70-year history.
He added that the development should inspire young Nigerians aspiring to leadership positions in international sports organisations, demonstrating that professionalism, competence and dedication could open doors to global opportunities.
“On behalf of all Nigerians, I congratulate Samson Adamu on this appointment. It is a proud moment for Nigeria. It is encouraging to see a Nigerian rise to such a strategic position in African football through years of hard work, competence and commitment,” Olopade said.
“This is the kind of achievement that should inspire young Nigerians to understand that sports administration offers enormous opportunities for professional growth and international recognition.”
The NSC chief said Adamu’s appointment reinforced Nigeria’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to the leadership and development of sports across Africa.
He also expressed confidence that Adamu’s experience in organising and managing football competitions would serve him well as he assumes responsibility for the day-to-day administration of African football’s governing body.
According to Olopade, the appointment comes at a crucial time as African football continues to expand its commercial appeal, international reach and influence.
He said the achievement aligns with the NSC’s broader objective of strengthening Nigeria’s presence in global sports administration while developing a sports sector capable of creating economic opportunities and attracting international partnerships.
Adamu has served CAF in several capacities, including Director of Competitions and Director of Tournaments and Events, before becoming Acting General Secretary on 29 March 2026 following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba.
Olopade wished the new CAF General Secretary success in his responsibilities, urging him to remain a worthy ambassador of Nigeria and contribute to the continued development of African football.
