The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) has issued a passionate appeal to political parties and stakeholders across the country to adopt a Muslim-Christian or Christian-Muslim presidential ticket in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, describing it as a necessary step toward national unity, equity, and inclusion.

In a press release signed by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, the coalition, which claims to represent millions of young Nigerians across the six geopolitical zones, said the aftermath of the 2023 Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket had left many Christians feeling “alienated, sidelined, and underrepresented” in national governance.

“While the decision in 2023 may have been based on political calculations, it undeniably left a deep sense of marginalisation among many Nigerians, particularly Christians,” the statement read.

“Nigeria is a country founded on diversity and mutual respect, and our leadership must reflect that.”

CONYL emphasised that a religiously balanced ticket is not just a political strategy, but a moral obligation, particularly in a country where faith plays a defining role in citizens’ identities.

According to the group, a balanced presidential ticket in 2027 would:Reassure marginalized groups that they are part of Nigeria’s future;Promote peace, interfaith harmony, and national cohesion; Set a precedent for future administrations to uphold fairness and inclusion.

“Young Nigerians are tired of politics that divide,” the group stated. “We want leadership that unites. As the largest voting bloc, we are demanding a ticket that reflects the collective identity of the nation.”

The coalition also warned that failing to address the religious imbalance seen in 2023 may deepen divisions and erode public trust in the democratic process.

CONYL called on all political actors to “heed the voice of the youth” and commit to presenting a ticket that embraces Nigeria’s diversity, strengthens democracy, and fosters inclusive governance.

“A united Nigeria is a stronger Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
