As the 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, commences after a vibrant and spectacular opening ceremony on Sunday, the director-general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, hailed the participating states and athletes, declaring it a groundbreaking event poised to set new standards in the history of the games.
The entire sporting community, both within the country and beyond, was captivated by a dazzling spectacle that featured a rich cultural display and world-class performances from renowned artists such as Davido and Asa.
In his address, Hon. Olopade underscored essential values including love, focus, discipline, and unity, which he described as the very essence of the National Sports Festival.
He emphasised that the festival would not only celebrate sports but also serve as a testament to integrity. “Let medals be won with honour, not by deceit,” he admonished, highlighting the importance of fair play and genuine sportsmanship.
The DG expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose personal interest in Nigerian sports has catalysed the current transformation within the sector. “We are where we are today—revamping, reshaping, and resetting our sports ecosystem—because of the vision of Mr President, the father of the nation. He is the reason why the National Sports Festival now boasts a new world-class standard, and we will continue to be grateful to him,” he stated.
Hon. Olapade also commended the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, for his steadfast dedication to the festival’s success. “Mallam Dikko has demonstrated immense commitment and love for this project. That spirit must be instilled in every athlete and official,” he added.
He expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his substantial support in mobilising resources and empowering all stakeholders. He referred to the games as “a festival of modern times,” poised to elevate Ogun’s status on both the national and international sports maps.
In a heartfelt conclusion, Hon. Olapade welcomed all participants to the state, saying, “Welcome to my story—a game I have passionately supported, a journey that carries my name.”
With excitement building, Ogun 2024 is shaping up to be a landmark edition of the National Sports Festival—one that celebrates not only athletic excellence but also unity, passion, and the enduring spirit of Nigeria.
