Football legend Kanu Nwankwo is set to partner with the Adamawa State Government to launch a Governor’s Cup football tournament aimed at discovering and developing young talents across the state’s 21 local government areas.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri announced his administration’s support for the tournament when Kanu and his team presented the proposal at Government House, Yola.

Fintiri said the competition would provide talented youngsters, particularly those in rural communities, with a platform to showcase their abilities and attract the attention of professional scouts.

He said his administration would ensure the tournament was properly organised and monitored by international scouts, unlike previous competitions where promising players were not adequately followed up.

The governor also warned against political interference in the selection of participants, insisting that only players with genuine football talent should be allowed to compete.

“Only players with genuine football talent should be allowed to participate so that the best can be discovered and developed,” he said.

Fintiri said the competition would culminate in a final at the new stadium being constructed by his administration, which he said was nearing completion.

He directed that a committee be constituted immediately to oversee the organisation of the tournament and make the necessary arrangements.

The governor said his administration considered sports development a vital part of youth development, warning that governments that neglect young people risk falling behind.

He also welcomed Kanu’s proposal for a six-kilometre health awareness walk and free medical screening, particularly for residents at risk of heart-related diseases.

Fintiri advised residents, especially those aged above 35, to regularly check their blood pressure and cholesterol levels and adopt preventive measures against heart disease.

Kanu, a former Nigeria international and Arsenal captain, said he accepted the invitation to Adamawa because of the development taking place under Fintiri’s administration.

The former Super Eagles captain said football had provided him with the opportunity to achieve success and that young people in Adamawa deserved similar opportunities.

He said the Governor’s Cup would take the search for talent to all 21 local government areas, with scouts identifying the best players for further development and exposure to professional clubs.

Kanu also pledged the support of his Kanu Heart Foundation for the state’s proposed medical programme.

He said the foundation had so far supported more than 700 open-heart surgeries and was ready to provide free medical screening and support for people with heart-related conditions.

According to Kanu, the medical activities would be organised around the Governor’s Cup final and the opening of Adamawa’s new stadium.

The initiative is expected to combine football talent discovery with health awareness as the state seeks to provide young footballers with a pathway into professional football.
