Akwa Ibom Ibom State government has directed owners of nightclubs and brothels in hotels and other private locations in the highbrow Ewet Housing Estate (EHE), Uyo, the state capital, to shut down operations immediately or risk a more punitive measure.

LEADERSHIP learnt that the government’s action became necessary following rampant cases of noise pollution and social nuisances, including prostitution by easy girls, rendering the Government Reserved Area (GRA) very uncomfortable for the big men and women.

Consequently, the managing director and chief executive officer (MD/CEO), Akwa Ibom Ibom Property and Investments Company (APICO), Barr. Patrick Udomfang, has given operators of such businesses a seven-day ultimatum within which to cease operations or be ready to face the big stick of government.

“To all operators of nightclubs in hotels and private properties, a directive is hereby given that such business is strictly prohibited.

“Nightclubs generate excessive noise, disturbing the peace and quietness of the area. Operations of Night Clubs have promoted anti – social behaviours, compromising the environment’s integrity and breach the conditions of allocation.

“Ewet Housing Estate, is a private residential area predominantly occupied by high – profile individuals, and as such, noise pollutions from Night Clubs will no longer be tolerated.
“Therefore, all hotel owners/operators are required to cease operations of Night Clubs immediately, as non-compliance will be met with specific consequences,” Udomfang warned.
