President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of Federal Polytechnic Kabo in Kano State into Federal University of Science and Technology.
Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who sponsored the bill seeking the institution’s upgrade, made the announcement in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday.
Expressing gratitude to the President for assenting to the bill, Senator Barau described the development as a bold step toward equipping Nigerian youths with cutting-edge knowledge and skills required in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Barau revealed that the presidential approval was formally conveyed in a letter read on the floor of the Senate during plenary, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Barau emphasised that the upgrade aligns with global best practices.“In the contemporary world, human capital development is crucial to national growth. With a large youth population in Nigeria, we must invest in institutions that can train them in emerging disciplines such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and cybersecurity,” he stated.
He congratulated the management, staff, students, and surrounding communities of the institution, urging them to embrace the transformation and uphold academic excellence as they transition into a university.
“This conversion is not just an upgrade in name but a gateway to greater opportunities for our youths. It will position Kano—and Nigeria—as a hub for scientific and technological advancement,” he added.
The new Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo is expected to commence full university operations once administrative and legal frameworks were put in place.
