The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP) has called on PDP stakeholders and delegates to prioritise merit in choosing the next set of national executives.
The conference, which urged party leaders to start mobilising for the party’s National Convention scheduled to hold from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 August 2025, urged them to set aside sentiments and focus on the bigger picture and collective interest of the party and the nation ahead of the gathering.
The CP-PDP also applauded the party for successfully convening the 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) last Tuesday, and approving the conduct of an early National Convention in August to elect new party national officers.
In a statement, protem national coordinator, CP-PDP, Barr. Obinna Nwachukwu, who described the coming National Convention as a step in the right direction, also noted “that majority of party members and indeed Nigerians believes that an early National Convention in August is the sure headway for the PDP to commence a clean leadership repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
He, however, said the CP-PDP is confidence in the ability of the Governor Ahmadu Fintiri-led National Convention Organizing Committee and Governor Douye Diri-led Zoning Committee to deliver a top-notch, transparent and credible National Convention that will reflect the values and ideals of the PDP as a democratic party.
“The Conference counsels the party leaders to note that Nigerians expect the PDP to prioritise merit, experience, institution memory and commitment above sectional and other divisive considerations in electing national officers at the August National Convention.
“This position is predicated on the fact that the leadership to be elected at the August National Convention will be vested with the highly demanding task of leading the party to victory in the 2027 general elections; a task that requires experience and requisite skills to deliver.
“The Conference therefore urges party stakeholders and delegates to set aside sentiments and focus on the bigger picture and collective interest of the party and the nation ahead of the National Convention.”
He added that CP-PDP is optimistic that the National Convention will lay the pathway for the party to redefine itself in the quest to recover power and restore a purposeful people-based government in the country.
