Mariyamu Gana-Aguele, a lawyer and advocate for peace and conflict resolution with a focus on women and children has called on Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, and the Federal Government to prioritize the safety, care, and well-being of individuals impacted by the devastating floods in Jebba and Mokwa.

The flood disaster which claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands of residents has been described as one of the most severe in Niger State’s history.

According to Gana-Aguele, “The situation in Jebba and Mokwa is critical, and we must act quickly to support those who have lost so much. My concern is the care and protection of women and children, who are often the most vulnerable in such crises. They need immediate attention and specialized support to ensure their safety and well-being.”

She however acknowledged the federal government’s prompt response to the crisis, saying; “I commend the Federal Government for their swift intervention so far, however, the scale of this disaster requires sustained and coordinated efforts from all levels of government and aid organizations.”

She further urged Governor Bago and the Federal Government to allocate sufficient resources to provide shelter, food, medical aid, and psychological support to all affected individuals, with a specific focus on safeguarding women and children from exploitation and harm.
