The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), in partnership with the Nigeria Sport For All Commission, is set to organise the Olympic Day celebration on Saturday, June 28, 2025, across various states in the country.
Olympic Day is an annual global event that marks the inception of the modern Olympic Movement, founded by French nobleman Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. The celebration offers individuals of all ages and abilities the opportunity to engage with the spirit of the Olympic Games in their local communities.
This year’s event aims to emphasise the importance of physical activity while promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Activities such as jogging and walking not only help burn calories and tone muscles but also contribute significantly to overall health and stress reduction.
The NOC has reported a favourable response from numerous states, with many already making preparations for activities to mark the occasion. In Lagos, where the NOC headquarters is situated, a variety of physical fitness and recreational activities will take place, including aerobic exercises, jogging sessions, and demonstration events.
The celebration will culminate in the presentation of diplomas, endorsed by the President of the International Olympic Committee, to participants.
The NOC is also calling on corporate entities and philanthropic individuals to support the celebration through financial contributions or product donations, which would provide valuable exposure for their organisations.
Dr Abdul Ibrahim, Chairman of the NOC Sport For All Commission, has urged state governments, via sports councils and commissions, to engage with this mass-oriented fitness programme, highlighting its potential to foster community spirit and promote health.
