In a bold move to safeguard the future of education in Bauchi State, the State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to contractors handling school construction and renovation projects to deliver quality projects or face contract revocation.

Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala said this during an ongoing oversight tour of newly constructed and renovated primary schools funded by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

Our correspondent reports that the tour spanned seven local government areas including Itas-Gadau, Giade, Shira, Jama’are, Ningi, Ganjuwa, and Warji.

Also, the oversight tour reflects the state assembly’s growing insistence on transparency, accountability, and quality delivery in public projects, especially those aimed at transforming the basic education sector.

Dr. Ala emphasised that every project must meet strict construction standards, including adherence to building codes, safety regulations, and project specifications, to guarantee the safety and comfort of students and staff.

“We cannot compromise on quality when it comes to our children’s education. Contractors must be transparent, accountable, and committed to delivering learning environments that will stand the test of time,” he stated.

The committee expressed severe displeasure over poor workmanship observed at Yazubillah Primary School in Ningi LGA, warning the contractor involved to rectify the substandard work immediately or risk revoking the contract.

He also called out the alarming trend of nonchalant attitudes among some contractors and engineers, accusing them of neglecting their responsibilities and undermining the state’s education development agenda.

“We’ve seen sites abandoned, and others where work hasn’t even started. This is unacceptable. Any contractor yet to mobilize or those who have left sites unattended must return and do the needful—urgently,” he warned.
