While many fans associate the tournament with familiar powerhouses like Real Madrid, Manchester City, or PSG, a deeper dive into other participating clubs reveals some seasoned veterans making a comeback on the world stage.

Hereunder are five players you might be surprised to know are set to feature in this year’s tournament.

1. Edinson Cavani – Boca Juniors (Argentina 🇦🇷)
Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is set to represent Boca Juniors, one of South America’s most iconic clubs. Once a feared marksman at Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli, Cavani’s move to Argentina may have slipped under the radar for casual fans.

With Boca earning a ticket to the Club World Cup through their continental campaigns, Cavani will have the chance to show that age has not dulled his killer instinct on the world stage.

2. Sergio Ramos – Club América (Mexico 🇲🇽)
The former Real Madrid captain and four-time Champions League winner is now with Club América, a powerhouse in Mexican football.

Ramos may no longer be in La Liga or the Champions League spotlight, but his leadership and aggressive defensive style remain intact. His presence in the Club World Cup will add gravitas to América’s campaign.

3. Hugo Lloris – Los Angeles FC (USA 🇺🇸)

Having left Manchester United in 2021, Rojo returned to his home country to anchor Boca’s defense.

5. Manuel Lanzini – River Plate (Argentina 🇦🇷)
Playmaker Manuel Lanzini, formerly of West Ham United, now pulls the strings at River Plate, Boca’s eternal rivals.

Though injuries plagued parts of his Premier League career, Lanzini’s technical skills, creativity, and eye for goal still shine in the Argentine league. With River Plate eyeing global recognition, Lanzini’s ability to unlock defenses could be the x-factor that propels them past more fancied sides in the tournament.
