The Stallions of Nigeria ended their 2025 Africa Men’s Sevens campaign on a high note with a thrilling 19–12 victory over the Leopards of Ghana. The win not only secured rugby bragging rights but also playfully ended the long-standing Jollof rice rivalry between the two nations.

The victory marked a 7th-place finish for Nigeria, a significant improvement from their 11th-place standing in the previous edition of the tournament.

Nigeria’s campaign was a rollercoaster of emotions, commencing with a challenging opener against continental powerhouses, South Africa. Despite a 17–5 defeat to the Blitzboks, the Stallions earned commendation for their spirited defence and unwavering determination.

They responded emphatically in their second group game, surging past Burkina Faso with a commanding 29–12 win that reignited hope and belief within the squad.

In their final group stage match, the Stallions faced Zambia in a nail-biting contest. Despite a gritty performance, Nigeria narrowly lost 14–7 in what was one of the most closely fought games of the round.

In the quarter-finals, Nigeria took on the Shujaa of Kenya in a high-octane showdown. Missing several regulars due to injury, the Stallions battled valiantly but were ultimately unable to withstand the Kenyan tide, succumbing to a 43–12 defeat against one of Africa’s elite sides.

Returning for the placement rounds with renewed determination, Nigeria met Zambia once more in a déjà vu clash. This time, the Stallions matched their opponents stride for stride, covering every inch of the pitch with intensity. However, they fell just short, losing 26–22 in another fiercely contested match.

This 7th-place finish is a testament to Nigeria’s progress, showcasing growth, resilience, and an ascending stature in African rugby.
