The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Bauchi State Command, has seized a total of 1,205.174 kilograms of various illicit substances between January and June 2025.
The breakdown includes 874.585 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, 330.588 kilograms of psychotropic substances and 1.06 grams of Methamphetamine (popularly known as ‘Ice’).
Bauchi State NDLEA Commander, CN Ali Aminu, disclosed this during at a briefing on Thursday to commemorate the United Nations International Day Against Drug/Substance Abuse and illicit Drug Trafficking.
Aminu revealed that within the period under review, the Command also arrested 127 suspected drug offenders including 118 male and 9 females, secured 28 convictions, while 18 other cases were pending in courts.
Additionally, 32 drug users were counseled and rehabilitated, most of them through brief interventions sessions.
Commander Aminu noted that the global illicit drug trade continues to devastate lives, overburden health systems, and fueling violence and organised crime.
Citing the 2025 UN theme, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention, Break the Cycle”, Aminu stressed that prevention remains the most sustainable strategy in combating drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
“Drug trafficking is tearing through communities with substances that are more potent, more dangerous, and more deadly than ever. While criminal networks prey on the most vulnerable group particularly women and youth,” Ali said.
He emphasised the importance of NDLEA’s flagship campaign, the “War Against Drug Abuse (WADA)”, which incorporates education, sensitisation and awareness programs as key tools in prevention drug trafficking by providing factual information about the dangers of drug use and the consequences of drug trafficking.
He called on all stakeholders, individuals, the state government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), schools, religious bodies and sister security agencies to collaborate in raising awareness and share information on the dangers of illicit substance abuse and trafficking and supporting anti-drug initiatives.
Aminu lauded the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer. Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.) for repositioning the agency and bringing in a new zeal into the personnel of the agency to rededicate themselves to fighting the scourge of illicit drug abuse and trafficking.
He further appreciated Governor Bala Mohammed for his keen interest and immense logistics support rendered to the State Command towards eradicating illicit drug abuse and trafficking.
“The war against illicit use and trafficking in drugs is ongoing, users and dealers are therefore warned to stay away from Bauchi State or be ready to face the wrath of the law,” Aminu warned.
He also commended the synergy among sister security agencies, and pledged continued commitment to keeping Bauchi State safe from drug-related crimes.
