The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has elected Hon Robert Madaki as its chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the upcoming February 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

The party also elected 10 councillorship flagbearers across the various wards in AMAC during its primary election held on Monday in Abuja.

The exercise was conducted using the Option A4 method, a transparent voting process where delegates queue behind their preferred candidates and was supervised by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Madaki clinched the party’s chairmanship ticket with a landslide victory, polling 42 out of 46 votes to defeat his sole opponent, Mazi Onyeabo Anagwu-Nnodu, who garnered just four votes.

In his acceptance speech, Madaki vowed to bring accountability and grassroots governance back to AMAC, noting that previous administrations had largely failed in connecting governance to the people.

“If I am elected into AMAC, I would provide accountability; because the leadership today in AMAC does not hold people accountable,” Madaki stated. “They only wait for the next election cycle to vote in another person.”

He also criticised the current political culture within the council, saying it lacks true grassroots engagement.

“There is no grassroots governance in AMAC today. AMAC is not visible to the people, and there is rarely anything that touches the lives of the people. Most of AMAC’s past chairmen have spent more time moving around with the FCT Minister and doing all kinds of political activities at the expense of the people who voted them into power,” he added.

Madaki disclosed that his ambition to serve the people of AMAC was not sudden, saying he has been preparing for the role for over two decades.

“We’ve done a lot of groundwork. I’ve been preparing for the last 20 years to serve the people of AMAC. The YPP is the party to beat, and with strong mobilization, we will emerge victorious,” he said confidently.

The ten councillorship candidates elected by the party include, David Ibukun Ojo (City Centre, Wilfred Agberagba (Garki), Sonia Atabe (Gwarinpa), Adegbe George Ibrahim (Gui) and Michael Onyekachi Nwachukwu (Jiwa).

Others are Jimoh Dogo (Nyanya), Francis Idhe (Karu), Joshua Chinuogu Chukwuma (Wuse), Ezekiel Ejembi (Kabusa) and Ogbebor Airenomonobiowan (Orozo).
