The emir of Katagum, Dr. Umar Faruk II, has called on education authorities and school administrators to enhance monitoring and supervision frameworks to curb the growing cases of absenteeism and laxity among teachers.

The emir made the call at the opening of a five-day capacity-building workshop for 200 teachers and school managers from Bauchi North yesterday in Azare, organised by the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) in collaboration with the Bauchi State Government through Project 19 Consultants Limited.

Represented by the Sintalin Katagum, Eng. Magaji Dahuwa, the emir expressed concern over what he described as an entrenched culture of truancy and indifference among some teachers, which he said contributes to the decline in education quality.

He urged education authorities to impose appropriate sanctions on erring teachers to serve as a deterrent.

Dr. Faruk further stressed the importance of prioritising skills training in schools to empower children to become self-reliant and appreciated the NEDC for its interventions to revive the region’s education sector.

The Bauchi State coordinator of the NEDC, Malam Aliyu Isyaku, reiterated the commission’s commitment to poverty alleviation and urged participants to seize the opportunity to improve their teaching capacity.

The executive chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Adamu Duguri, linked teachers’ laxity to dishonesty.

Represented by the director of School Services, Malam Zuhairu Usman, he appealed to other organisations to emulate the NEDC’s initiative in strengthening the education sector.
