Imo Gov’t Orders Herders Out Of Owerri Streets  

The Imo State Government in a renewed move to address growing concerns over uncontrolled cattle grazing in Owerri, has set July 24, 2025, as the final deadline for ending open grazing in the state capital.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Anthony Mgbeahurike, during a meeting with cattle breeders and herders in Owerri.

Mgbeahurike stressed that the Uzodimma administration was determined to maintain peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups while safeguarding the socio-economic stability of the city.

“The government has provided critical support to herders in the past, including free vaccination of cattle against anthrax. But we can no longer allow unchecked cattle roaming that disrupts daily life and threatens public order in Owerri,” Dr. Mgbeahurike stated.

The Commissioner also emphasised the need for mutual respect between herders and farmers.

“Herders must avoid the destruction of farmlands and, in cases of accidental damage, promptly compensate affected farmers,” he said.

Anxious to guarantee effective communication and compliance, Dr. Mgbeahurike officially recognised Alhaji Shuaibu as the new leader of cattle herders in the state.

The Commissioner saddled Shuaibu with the responsibility of informing fellow herders about the government’s new directive and ensuring strict compliance.

In his response, Alhaji Shuaibu expressed gratitude for the government’s response, support, and apologised for disruptions caused by open grazing.

“We pledge our cooperation with the government and will work hard to comply with this directive.

“We commend Governor (Hope) Uzodimma’s inclusive leadership and reaffirm our commitment to peace and clean environment in the state.
