The Kano State Government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the deaths of two students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, following a fatal attack by fellow students within the school premises.
The deceased students, Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were allegedly assaulted with improvised dangerous metal objects locally called ‘Gwale-Gwale’. The attack was reportedly carried out by senior students who accused the victims of committing an undisclosed offence and decided to punish them.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Kano State Ministry of Education, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru.
“Kano State Government has promised to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident,” the statement assured.
According to the statement, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Bashir Baffa Muhammad, directed that a thorough and transparent investigation be conducted immediately to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Muhammad, who visited the school, also cautioned students against taking the law into their hands. “You should avoid taking law into your hands but rather make sure you report any matter of concern to the school authority for appropriate action,” the Permanent Secretary was quoted as saying.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray to Almighty Allah to grant the souls of the deceased Jannatul Firdaus,” he added.
Family members of the deceased have appealed for justice. Malam Ibrahim Yusuf Dungurawa, a relative of Umar Yusuf, narrated how the family was devastated by the news and called on the government to ensure that justice prevails.
Similarly, Malam Idris Garba Tofawa, father of late Hamza Idris, while describing the loss as a divine test, urged the authorities to act decisively.
