A group, Change Development Initiative (CCDI), in partnership with the Swiss Embassy in Nigeria, has inaugurated newly built toilet facilities for pupils in low-income areas of Abuja.

The two eight-stall toilet blocks were constructed at LEA Nomadic Primary School, Apo Dutsen-Garki, and LEA Primary School, Kabusa.

In a statement on Tuesday, CCDI’s executive director, Mrs Sharon Ayeni, said the facilities were designed to boost the pupils’ dignity and promote better learning conditions.

She said the project aims to improve hygiene and create a safer, healthier environment for children attending public primary schools.

The intervention is the first phase of CCDI’s Public-School Revival Initiative, which focuses on upgrading critical infrastructure in public schools.

The commissioning ceremony, which will involve Swiss Embassy officials, education authorities and community leaders, is scheduled for today.

The executive director stressed the importance of basic sanitation for children in underserved areas.

“Access to clean, functional toilets is not a luxury, it is a basic right,” she said and thanked the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Patrick Egloff, for his support.

The project also aligns with Nigeria’s national Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) agenda for schools.

In addition to the two completed facilities, CCDI announced that two more toilet projects and three library renovations are underway.
