The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has warned kingmakers in Yorubaland, to henceforth desist from allowing anybody with what they described as foreign religion to be crowned as Oba.

Apparently reacting to the burial of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, a National Leader of the OPC, Comrade Adesina Akinpelu also appealed to all traditional leaders in Yorubaland to remain calm and use maturity to address the issue.

“Anybody who is not ready to embrace our culture and tradition should not even aspire to be crowned as an Oba. This is causing setback for our tradition,” Akinpelu said.

He also strongly condemned how leaders usually travel abroad for medical treatments, saying the lesson learnt from former President Muhammadu Buhari‘s death should inspire political leaders to fix Nigeria’s medical facilities.

Akinpelu, who expressed condolences to the people of Daura, Katsina State and entire Nigerians over the death of Buhari, specifically commiserated with the family of the late former President.

He described what happened during the burial of the Awujale as an embarrassment to the Yoruba traditional institution.

“This will stop them from dying in foreign hospitals and bringing their corpses back as cargo to their fatherland”, he stressed.

Akinpelu also mourned the late Oba Adetona, who recently joined his ancestors, commiserated with people of Ijebuland at home and abroad, and also the Ogun State government.
