The family of late Maina Sule who was crushed to death along Baga road in Maiduguri in September, 2024 are begging the Nigerian military to fulfill the promises made to them when they brought the remains of their bread winner and subsequently attended the third day prayers of the deceased.
Aisha Kyari, the widow of the late Maina Sule who was a driver before the incident, while in tears , said the military brought the remains of the late husband alongside community members and apologised, and even gave her daughter N10,000 , in addition to food items including bag of rice, semolina, a carton of pasta and cooking oil.
She said the military personnel also attended the third day prayers and promised so many things, but did not set eyes on them again after leaving their house on that faithful day.
She said they are presently surviving on donations from some residents and handouts from local mosque.
The widow said,” The military brought the remains of my late husband alongside community members. They apologised and gave my daughter N10,000. They gave us food items which include bag of rice ,semolina, a carton of pasta and cooking oil.
“ The military personnel also attended the third day prayers and promised to support us with house ,food stuffs . They as well promised to take care of my two sickle cell children, as well as to sponsoring of the education of my children, but non of these promises has been fulfilled as of today. “
Also in tears is the little daughter of the deceased Maina, Falmata Maina who said,” Our father used to take good care of us when he was alive, but now we are going through tough times. “
A community member, Lawan Babagana noted that some of the children are sicklecell patients with no one to look after them, saying that it is their mother that takes them to hospital, and sometimes lacked money to do that or even provide food for them.
He said it is the community members that sometimes gather money to give to the widow so that she would buy food for the children.
Another community member Mohammed Babangida said, ‘‘Honestly, the community members have been supporting the family, but because of the economic hardship, we are finding it difficult to support them now. We are pleading with anyone to support atleast the widow to have something doing so that she can support the family.’’
Ten months after Sule, a father of nine, was killed his family is still waiting for promises of support to be fulfilled.
His widow and children remain in deep hardship, struggling to survive with sickle cell while seeking justice and compensation.
