A new era of effective collaboration between the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) is creating a positive atmosphere for Team Nigeria’s athletes and officials as they prepare for the inaugural Africa Schools Sports Games.

The partnership is already producing tangible outcomes, with the NOC and NSC providing team uniforms that ensure the contingent is well-equipped, thereby boosting morale.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the NOC, highlighted that this collaborative approach has streamlined preparations, enabling the team to focus on representing the nation with pride.

NOC President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), expressed his optimism regarding the partnership. “This is how it should be,” remarked Engr. Gumel. He noted that the era of mutual suspicion, which had previously led to negative outcomes, is now behind them. Disunity that had threatened prior campaigns, including the last Olympic Games, has become a thing of the past.

The strategic planning by the NSC leadership has also received widespread acclaim. NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade were instrumental in arranging a direct charter flight for Team Nigeria to Annaba, effectively circumventing significant logistical challenges that would have arisen from a lengthy connecting journey from Algiers.

However, both Dikko and Olopade are expected to arrive on 28 July 2025, following the Falcons’ final soccer match at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, meaning they will miss the opening ceremonies of the inaugural tournament taking place today in Annaba, Algeria.

As the athletes settle into their surroundings, they have encountered some unique and friendly local residents. The Games’ Village, located on the University of El Boni campus, boasts a notable population of amiable cats, which roam freely and have become a charming feature of the village, graciously accepting treats from members of the various contingents from across Africa.
