A python that recently sparked panic in Daneji and surrounding communities in Kano after escaping from the residence of former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris’ house, has been recovered and relocated along with other wild animals to the Kano Zoological Garden.

Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, confirmed the development during a radio interview on Sunday.

Muhammad stated that the python was captured and evacuated safely alongside a crocodile and a lion cub which were also found on the premises.

“The former AGF voluntarily handed over the animals after residents raised concerns,” Muhammad said, assuring the public that all the animals are now in secure custody at the zoo.

He clarified that Idris had a valid license to keep the animals, in accordance with the Wild Animal Law, which permits individuals to domesticate certain species under regulated conditions.

“These include non-endangered and some endangered species, provided the law’s requirements are met—such as proper habitat, feeding, and safety,” he explained.

Muhammad further noted that while the lion was only a cub and posed no immediate danger, the law mandates the annual renewal of licenses and transfer of animals to the zoo as they mature.

“Due to neighbourhood concerns, the former AGF opted to surrender the animals, and we conducted a discreet night-time evacuation,” he said, urging residents to remain calm.

LEADERSHIP reports the Ex-AGF’s neighbours have raised concern regarding the continued stay of wild animals in their area since the python escaped last week.
