The chief medical director (CMD) of the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure (FUTATH), Prof Segun Ojo, has said there is an urgent need to keep raising the standard of training, research and service delivery in the institution and others to be able to contribute meaningfully to solving the health challenges of the nation.

Prof Ojo stated this at the commissioning and handing over ceremony of a 20-bedded, one-storey building for house officers (intern doctors) at the take-off site of the FUTA Teaching Hospital.

The edifice, which was built and donated by Chief Sunday Owoyemi, the Oluomo 1 of Akure Kingdom, was commissioned by the state governor, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

In his address, the CMD noted that the new Intern Doctors Quarter was not an end, but a stepping stone to greater achievements for the institution.

He said the institution is committed to creating an enabling environment for medical training and practice, noting that the interns who are the direct beneficiaries of the project, represent the future of care in our nation.

“When we support them, we are indirectly investing in the health and well-being of millions of Nigerians who they will serve throughout their careers.

“We are not merely unveiling a building. We are unveiling hope, stability, and progress. For many young doctors, especially those in their internship year, accommodation challenges often add to the weight of an already demanding training schedule.

“This building is therefore more than walls and a roof – it is a place of rest, comfort and dignity. It is an environment where young doctors can focus on the noble task of learning and serving, without the burden of accommodation insecurity,” he said.
