World football governing body, FIFA, has issued an official communication hours before the highly anticipated World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Nigeria on Tuesday, clarifying the permutations in Africa’s Group C.

Bafana Bafana sit top of the group with 16 points, six clear of the Super Eagles who have struggled with just two wins from seven matches, amassing 10 points. Benin Republic remain in the race with 11 points as they host Lesotho in Abidjan, making Tuesday’s fixtures potentially decisive.

According to FIFA’s official statement on X, “Two more teams could secure @fifaworldcup 26 qualification today. Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso, while South Africa will qualify if they beat Nigeria, and Benin fail to beat Lesotho.”

The clarification has, however, fuelled fresh debate among fans, particularly regarding the unresolved disciplinary case involving South Africa.

LEADERSHIP reports that Bafana Bafana were facing the possibility of being docked three points and three goals for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March. While ESPN had earlier reported the potential sanction, FIFA was yet to issue a ruling.

Benin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, voiced his displeasure at the governing bodies’ silence. “FIFA and CAF have failed to act on a disciplinary case involving South Africa fielding an ineligible player,” Rohr said, lamenting what he described as an unexplained delay.

The uncertainty means Group C remains delicately poised. A win for South Africa over Nigeria could seal their automatic ticket to the 2026 World Cup, if Benin fails to beat Lesotho. But should sanctions eventually be enforced, the table could swing dramatically, keeping all the remaining three teams in contention.
