Bauchi Assembly Pledges Support For Almajiri Education Reform

Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, has expressed the commitment of the legislature to support the mandate of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children through the domestication of its enabling law in the state.

The speaker made the pledge at the maiden annual general meeting (AGM) of the commission in Kano State.

The speaker who was represented by the chairman, House Committee on Education, Dr Nasiru Ala, said the Bauchi legislature has already taken proactive steps to strengthen Almajiri education and address the plight of out-of-school children.

He cited motions and bills that have been presented to advance the system, including a motion urging the executive to integrate foundational literacy, numeracy and vocational skills into the Qur’anic/Tsangaya curriculum in the state.

He also noted that the Assembly has continued to advance the implementation of the Child Rights Law as part of its broader educational reforms.

The speaker explained that the AGM, which provided a platform for dialogue among federal, state and local stakeholders, emphasised the need for sustained collaboration in addressing the challenge of Almajiri and out-of-school children nationwide.

He also stressed the importance of cooperation among governments, development partners and communities in delivering lasting solutions to uplift the standard of education and safeguard the future of vulnerable children across the country.
