Jose Mourinho began his tenure as Benfica manager with a resounding 3-0 victory over AVS Futebol SAD in the Primeira Liga.
Appointed on Thursday after Bruno Lage’s departure following a disappointing Champions League defeat, Mourinho witnessed Heorhiy Sudakov open the scoring just before half-time. Vangelis Pavlidis and Franjo Ivanovic extended Benfica’s lead to secure the three points.
Despite the strong start, Mourinho urged caution, stating, “Winning isn’t phenomenal, but it was the best thing we could do after a psychologically heavy defeat.”
Benfica now sits second in the Portuguese top-flight standings with 13 points from five matches.
