The Flying Eagles experienced misfortune in their opening match of the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup finals, losing 1-0 to Norway on Monday night.
The defeat was handed down to the Flying Eagles despite dominating play and creating numerous chances, particularly in the second half.
Norway took the lead early, scoring from a contentious penalty in the 9th minute. However, the Flying Eagles responded fiercely and sought to equalise, only to be denied penalty calls on two occasions in the second half.
In the 47th minute, Kparobo Arierhi’s left-footed shot from inside the box drifted narrowly wide, with the goalkeeper completely beaten. Then, in the 63rd minute, Tahir Maigana’s left-footed effort was thwarted by the base of the upright.
The two-time silver medallists mounted relentless attacks against the Europeans, but Norway effectively placed numerous players behind the ball, thwarting dozens of attempts.
In the 71st minute, the crowd erupted in anticipation of an equaliser, but midfielder Nasiru Salihu’s rising shot from the right soared just a bit too high, sailing over the crossbar.
With seven minutes left on the clock, the indefatigable Tahir Maigana tried his luck from distance, only to see his effort narrowly missed the target.
The Flying Eagles now turn their attention to their next match against Saudi Arabia on Thursday.
