A group of concerned citizens in Kano State, led by Barrister Nafisa Abba Isma’il, chairlady of the Women Lawyers Congress, staged a peaceful protest on Thursday evening in support of the State’s Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

The protest, which began at Tukur Road and ended at Race Course in Nasarawa GRA in Kano, saw demonstrators carrying placards to express opposition to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s call for the Police Commissioner’s removal from the State.

Speaking during the protest march, Barr. Isma’il urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to disregard the governor’s request, describing it as “politically motivated.”

“While government’s inactions allow insecurity to thrive, the people deserve protection, not abandonment,” she said. “It is also important to note that since the governor assumed office, it has become his tradition to neglect the police and deny them adequate funding to effectively combat security challenges. This was exactly the case with previous commissioners of police.”

She added, “At a time when Kano is facing intensified thuggery-related activities, there is a need for collaboration between the government and security agencies. So, it is unwise to call for the CP’s dismissal at this time.”

According to her, the Police Command in Kano had long suffered from lack of support and resources, making it unfair to place blame solely on the current Commissioner of Police.

“In view of the foregoing, we strongly urge the Inspector General of Police to disregard politically motivated attempts by the Kano State government to remove the Commissioner of Police. Instead, we call for strengthening collaboration between the police and all stakeholders in order to restore and preserve peace,” she added.

LEADERSHIP reports the demonstration comes a day after Governor Yusuf demanded the immediate replacement of CP Bakori, accusing him of partisanship and unethical conduct following the police command’s withdrawal from the Independence Day parade at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Wednesday.
