Team Nigeria’s junior swimmers made a remarkable start at the ongoing 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championship, securing two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals on the first day of competition, which commenced in Accra on Friday, October 3.
Aidan Dumuje triumphed with two gold medals in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke events, while Timileyin Olaiya and Goodluck Godwin each earned a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke, respectively. Ibidapo Tofunmi added to the tally with a silver medal in the 400m individual medley.
The Nigerian team, comprised of five female and four male swimmers, is led by Taiwo Oriss, Secretary of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, with Abiodun Ojomo serving as the technical coach. The team arrived in Accra on Thursday and participated in their first training session on Friday morning before the competition began. Despite facing challenges during their preparation and acclimatisation, the athletes delivered impressive performances on the opening day and are optimistic about winning more medals as the event progresses.
The Africa Zone 2 Championship features elite swimmers from across the West and Central African regions, offering a platform for both challenging competition and the development of emerging talent.
