National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has destroyed 700 sacks of donkey parts handed over by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in Kaduna in compliance with environmental regulations and safety protocols.
A statement signed by NESREA’s assistant director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, indicated that the donkey bones and skins were destroyed on October 3rd, 4th, and 6th, 2025.
Ejiofor said two facilities were utilised for the incineration of the bones. At the same time, the skins were buried in a designated area, adding that the exercise was conducted in the presence of regulatory officers and in accordance with environmental standards.
The statement explained that the exercise’s success was made possible through the collaboration of the NESREA and the NCS, which ensured that the destruction was carried out in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
This marks a notable achievement in the efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and protect endangered species.
In July 2025, NESREA incinerated over 100 bags of donkey genitals handed over by NCS in Abuja.
The director-general of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, lamented the declining donkey population in Nigeria and warned that they are gradually going extinct. He reiterated the Nigerian government’s firm stance against the illegal exploitation of donkeys.
