Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract extending his stay at the club until 2029. The Dutch international, who joined from Ajax in 2019, has become a crucial part of the team’s midfield. De Jong expressed his commitment to winning titles with Barcelona as he continues to pursue his childhood dream.

“Barcelona are confident that the midfielder can be a pivotal part of the current sporting project due to his quality and experience,” the club stated.

De Jong has faced challenges with form at times but became a key figure in the midfield under Hansi Flick last season alongside Pedri Gonzalez.

“I always dreamed of playing for Barcelona, and now that I am living that dream, I want to continue pursuing it for many more years and am eager to win titles,” De Jong said at a news conference.

Having arrived under previous Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, De Jong is one of the club’s highest earners. Reports suggest he has accepted a pay cut in his new deal, which will take effect from the 2026/27 season.

De Jong commented that previous media reports regarding his salary were exaggerated and had affected how he was perceived by fans.

“I won’t disclose what I will earn; they’ve always talked about it a lot, but I believe the figures regarding what I earned before have been greatly exaggerated,” he explained. “I think this has impacted how people view me because if they read in newspapers that Frenkie earns this, and that he is the highest-paid player in Europe… it has an effect.”

Barcelona attempted to sell De Jong in 2022 as part of cost-cutting measures, but the midfielder remained steadfast in his desire to stay at the club, where he has made over 250 appearances.

“I don’t feel undervalued by my teammates, coaches, or within the club; that’s more of a media issue,” added De Jong. “That’s the beauty of football—everyone is entitled to their opinion.”
