Osinbajo Leads ECOWAS Election Observation Mission To Côte d’Ivoire

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed  the immediate past Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), to lead its Election Observation Mission to the presidential election in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire  scheduled for 25 th October, 2025.

The mission will be in the country till 29th October, 2025 in line with the provisions of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

As head of mission, Osinbajo will lead a team of eminent West Africans tasked with  engaging key national stakeholders to support a peaceful and credible electoral process, fostering  cooperation with other international and domestic observer groups, and assessing the conduct of  the polls.

The deployment of this Observation Mission underscores ECOWAS’s unwavering commitment to promoting peace, stability, and credible elections in the sub-region.

The President of Ivory Coast is elected by plurality vote to a once renewable 5-year term, according to the International Foundation For Electoral Systems.

The last election was held in 2020 where the incumbent, Alassane Quattara was elected with 94 percent of the vote.

Besides Quattara, who is seeking re-election, other candidates in the election are Simone Gbagbo; Jean-Louis Billon; Ahoua Don Mello; Henriette Lagou Adjoua.

Some aspirants, including former president Laurent Gbagbo, were disqualified from contesting the election.
