The 2025 Kaduna International Polo Tournament has received a significant financial boost, with over N150 million raised through a traditional cheque presentation held at Murtala Mohammed Square in Kaduna over the weekend. The lead sponsors, First Bank of Nigeria PLC, partnered with the Nigerian Polo Association (NPA) and other co-sponsors to make this achievement possible.

In an address to journalists at the event, Muhammad Babangida, President of the Kaduna Polo Club, praised the sponsors and highlighted the evolution of polo in Nigeria. He noted that El-Amin Polo has dominated the scene for many years, positioning polo in Nigeria at a robust level.

Babaginda refuted the perception that polo is solely a game for the affluent, asserting that it is accessible to all who have a passion for the sport. He acknowledged that in the past five years, a new wave of passionate players has emerged, contributing to the sport’s growth.

“Polo is sustainable in Nigeria. People should understand that 90% of polo players in this country do not come from wealthy families. They are supported by sponsors and patrons, and we need both sides for the sport to thrive,” Babangida stated.

He expressed confidence that Nigerian polo will gradually match the standards of Argentina and South Africa, stating, “The Kaduna Polo Club is probably the most prominent in Nigeria.”

Similarly, the tournament manager, Atiku Abubakar Saleh, who holds the traditional title of Baraden Maru, extended his gratitude to the sponsors and invited guests for their support in celebrating a century of polo excellence and tradition.

“About 15 or more foreign and international players are expected to participate in the tournament,” he announced, adding that the trophies up for competition include the Historic Georgian Cup, which boasts nearly a century of history, and the Emir of Katsina Cup, featuring numerous teams.

The Kaduna International Polo Tournament stands as one of Africa’s most distinguished polo sporting and social events, attracting top players and dignitaries from across the country and beyond.
