Lecturers Suspend Strike, Give Govt 1 Month To Address Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, which began on 13 October 2025. The union gave the federal government a one-month ultimatum to address the union’s long-standing demands.
ASUU national president, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension at a press conference in Abuja yesterday.

He said the decision followed what he described as the federal government’s “renewed commitments” to address critical issues affecting university lecturers and the public university system.

“The National Executive Council (NEC) resolved that the warning strike is hereby suspended immediately. Should the government fail to address the issues within one month, ASUU reserves the right to return to its initial decision.”

He explained that the union’s decision to embark on the warning strike two weeks earlier was not taken lightly, but was necessitated by what ASUU termed the government’s “persistent neglect and insincerity” in implementing the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and related matters.

“Our members had no desire to go on strike. When we gathered here about ten days ago to painfully declare a warning strike, it was a decision that left us with no other choice.

“The government would not respond to several overtures for dialogue or to address the lingering renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and other issues bordering on the welfare of our members and the repositioning of Nigerian public universities,” he said.

According to Piwuna, ASUU’s demands include the payment of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances (EAA), release of third-party deductions, and revitalisation funding for public universities.

He revealed that following the strike declaration, the government initially responded with threats and directives to Vice-Chancellors to weaken the union’s action, but later engaged in constructive dialogue.

“We can report that ASUU has had useful engagements with representatives and agents of government in the last week. Our team met on Thursday, 16th, and Saturday, 18th October 2025, with the Yayale Ahmed-led Federal Government team to consider the government’s response to the Draft Renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement. While we have not fully achieved our objectives, we are definitely not where we were before the strike began.”

The ASUU president further commended the National Assembly, particularly the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education, TETFund, and Labour, for their mediation efforts.

“ASUU must place on record the swift intervention of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, led by their respective Chairmen. Our engagements with the committees on Friday, 19th October, and the follow-up meeting with the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, appeared promising in amicably resolving all outstanding issues. Our members place a lot of hope on the strong promises made by these distinguished Senators.”

He added that the union’s decision to suspend the strike was partly in recognition of the interventions by well-meaning Nigerians, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), students, parents, and the media.

“The decision to review the action was borne out of respect for our students and their parents, the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress and other well-meaning Nigerians who have mediated in the last ten days. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for their understanding, resilience, and demonstration of solidarity,” Piwuna stated.

While noting that the government had finally returned to the negotiating table after almost a year of inactivity, Piwuna stressed that the suspension was only temporary and conditional.

“The NEC meeting concluded that the warning strike’s objective had been partly achieved. Hence, the ongoing strike was reviewed to create an atmosphere conducive to further engagements between the two parties. However, ASUU remains firm in its commitment to ensuring that the agreements are implemented to the letter.”

He urged the federal government to seize the opportunity to resolve the issues in good faith during the one-month window.

“NEC hopes that the government will take advantage of this opportunity to resolve all the issues timeously, to guarantee industrial harmony, and to ensure the stability of our academic calendar as it has always promised,” Piwuna said.

ASUU embarked on industrial action on October 13, 2025, after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government.
