The United Nigeria Movement has endorsed the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for the 2023 general elections.
The endorsement came after a meeting of the organisation in Abuja.
Chairman of UNM, Baba El-Nafaty, who spoke with the media yesterday said they were backing Atiku because of his track record both in politics and in governance.
Nigeria, he said was better run under the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo, when Atiku served as vice president and was largely known to have been in charge of the economy.
El-Nafaty said Atiku had also been in politics since the early 1990s when he contested for the presidential ticket of the Social Democratic Party against the late business mogul, MKO Abiola.
UNM, he said, was already laying the ground work to mobilise voters, particularly the youth, across the six geo-political zones of the country.
He added that the group planned to engage directly with voters, market women and religious leaders to build support for Atiku rather than rely on political office holders who do not necessarily speak for the people or share their sentiments.
He also said that the ruling All Progressives Congress had nothing to show for the nearly eights it has spent in government except for a failing economy and increased insecurity.
