The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a political boycott of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing delays in the hearing of an appeal filed by its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, against his conviction.
The group said its members would shun APC rallies and reject the party’s symbols until the appeal was scheduled for hearing.
In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said Kanu’s appeal against the judgment delivered on November 20, 2025, had yet to be listed for hearing.
The group also alleged that the Federal Government had not filed its response to the appeal, which it said raised constitutional questions about Kanu’s conviction under a law it claimed had been repealed.
IPOB called on the relevant authorities to ensure that the appeal was heard without further delay, insisting that the courts should determine the legal issues surrounding the conviction.
The group also raised concerns over what it described as the disappearance of a court file relating to Kanu’s alleged 14-month detention without trial.
According to IPOB, the detention followed his discharge by the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022. It called for the restoration of the missing file, accusing the authorities of frustrating efforts to secure justice in the matter.
The group further alleged that the Federal Government applied different standards in its security operations across the country.
It claimed that military operations, arrests and detentions in the South-East were harsher than the government’s handling of armed groups in other regions.
IPOB also criticised former Ebonyi State governor and Minister of Works, David Umahi, over his role in the 2017 decision by South-East governors to proscribe the group.
It alleged that the decision paved the way for subsequent security operations and crackdowns in the region.
The group cautioned South-East politicians working with the APC against prioritising political interests over the welfare of the Igbo people.
However, IPOB urged its supporters to observe the boycott peacefully, warning them against threatening or harassing individuals because of their political affiliations.
The group reiterated its demand for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, the scheduling of his appeal for hearing and the restoration of the allegedly missing court file.
